According to the D.O.N.A International "... Doula is a knowledgeable, experienced component [person] – who stays with them [birthing mother and family] through labor, birth and beyond. Birth doulas offer emotional support, encouragement and wisdom throughout labor and birth. Postpartum doulas support women and families through the transformation that a new baby brings to a family." Both kinds of Doulas are important. Some Birthing Doulas (such as myself) offer postpartum care as well.
The word Doula is translated to "women's servant". It is important to Keep in mind despite what the word is defined as, every Doula is not the same. Support is necessary for family's and mother. We are not there to take your family's place, or your partners. We give extra support ware you want it. Every family is different.
